LARES BASE CAMP
(3 Day / 2 Night)

The Lares Trek 3 days is one of the most popular alternative treks that travelers choose to do in Cuzco. On this trek, we will visit small Inca sites, local communities and observe the traditional customs of people.

Day 1 - Cuzco - Calca - Lares Hot Springs - Huacawasi ( camp )
Morning you will be met by private car and guide until reaching a small town of Calca located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. At this time of the morning it is a spectacular trip. Along the way we will visit the Inca qolqas (granaries) of Muyoq Orqo, and then continue, passing the mountain of Sawasiray before beginning at the Willka Punku pass the ascent to Lares. Here there will be time to rest and enjoy the thermal baths of Lares. After lunch the walk begins to our first campsite at the village of Huacawasi, where we will visit the weaving families and have our evening meal. (CB/L/D) ( camp )

  • Driving distance: Cusco to Calca: 31.6 miles (51 km) paved Calca to Lares: 26 miles (42 km) dirt road Approximate bus journey time: 3 hours. Total hiking distance (Thermal baths to Huacawasi): 3.9 miles (6.3 km)//Approximate Walking Time: 3 hours//Maximum Altitude: 10,775 ft (3285 m)

    Day 2 - Huacawasi - Ipsayqocha ( camp )
After breakfast, the trek continues towards Ipsayqocha, a constant climb through the natural habitat of llamas and alpacas. Here, there are high Andean birds and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. In the afternoon we arrive at our second campsite in a completely isolated spot far from any human settlements. Day 3 - Ipsayqocha - Ollantaytambo - Cuzco
On this day, we reach the high pass of Ipsayqocha (14,271 ft / 4350 m), in a landscape dotted with herds of llamas and alpacas.Once over the pass, a long descent takes the walker to the indigenous community of Patacancha, where our private vehicle will be waiting to take us to the Inca town of Ollantaytambo the oldest continuously habituated town of the Inca. Here there are several structures of importance to the Inca. At the top of the sixteen massive terraces are the ever impressive ruins of Ollantaytambo Fortress where it is known the Inca fought some of their strongest battles. The huge precisely carved stones were transported somehow by hundreds of men down one mountain range to the Ollantaytambo location and fitted perfectly to support a strategic fortress that has bared the test of time. There is as well the silos or grain mills that are directly adjacent to the fortress and were to have maintained thousands of pounds of grain for the Inca and its people. Afterwards return to Cuzco and the hotel. (B/L) (Optional : overnight in Ollantaytambo, train to Machu Picchu or return to Cuzco.)
